With fans having been absent from games for the majority of the past 18 months, this standalone audio documentary - embedded in an article on The Athletic entitled This is what football sounds like - was commissioned at the start of the new season to celebrate the true essence of the matchday ritual and allow those who have still yet to be part of a crowd again to connect with it once more. The audio was recorded using binaural microphones in order to create a fully immersive 360° experience. The narration is semi-poetic and, coupled with sophisticated sound design - which layers and pans ambient noise, speech, musical score and more - helps to create a powerful and often moving soundscape. From the journey there to the journey back, football possesses an aural anatomy including and beyond what you witness in the stadium. This documentary captures that spirit in all its grime and glory.
